How To Forward Domain Names
On this page we’ll discuss how to Forward a Domain Name.
When a Domain Name is forwarded any visitors typing in that domain name will land at the website you specified. This is useful if you also own the .NET of your domain name or any other extention other than your .COM.
The .com is your primary name, everything else is a Forward to it.
We will assume you have registered your domain names at godaddy.com but any Registrar will work pretty much the same way on Forwarding. It is almost Always Free!
Login to your Registrar, where your domain name is registered. On Godaddy under the Home button you will see “Domains” button with a dropdown, select My Domains. this brings up a new window with a listing of domain names you own.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to the name you want to Forward. Then look to the top, just above your name list you will see “Forward” is now lit up, click that.
In the first box “Forward To” type in the website URL you want to forward to starting with http://
Then select 301 as the forward type, then at the top of that little window select Masking tab.
Masking allows you to control the meta tags on the name being forwarded just like the meta tags on your website. We cover those more on our page “How To Optimize for Search Engines”
Click OK.
It can sometimes take upto 48 hours for the Forward to kick in. With Godaddy we’ve seen it done in minutes.
