On this page we’ll discuss how to Sell Domain Names.
If you have Domain Names you are no longer using, rather than letting them expire you can sell them on a secondary market!
We recommend Afternic.com because they are secure with a great Escrow service which protects you during the sale of a name.
Afternic charges under $20 per year to list as many names as you wish for sale. They also take 10 to 20% of the total sale after the sale is completed. You can hop over there and Create an Afternic Account now.
When you receive an offer for a domain name we Strongly recommend contacting the bidder with a counter offer via afternic’s contact system. Make it something you are comfortable with but not full price since they would have paid that outright if they had been willing already.
We usually say something like:
“Dear (bidder name), We are excited to get your offer but because of the high demand for this domain name the Reserve is a bit higher at (whatever it is), If you could come up to (#middle ground between their offer and your reserve) We’d be happy to finalize this agreement today!”
This gets you one of 3 Possible responses…
A. No response – Decide if you can live with offer Or NOT.
B. They make you a return offer
C. They accept your offer and the sale is done! This is actually what happens most often for us!
After you and the bidder come to a price you both agree on, the domain name will go into Escrow. Step 1 will be for the Bidder to make payment to Afternic. Afternic then holds the money once it has cleared and You then begin the transfer process of the name to the information the buyer has provided afternic. Wait for Afternic to send you notification that its your turn for this step!
Take the new owners info and login to you domain name Registrar and begin the ownership transfer steps there, once complete return to Afternic and confirm you completed that step. Continue following the steps there.
This process can be VERY fast. We have completed the full process in as few as 3 days with the money landing in our Paypal account that 3rd day. If it’s going slow it’s usually the Buyer not understanding the process and you can contact them via Afternic and give them a Polite nudge. Any contacting the Buyer via Afternic sends the Buyer an email with a copy to Afternic.
What makes Afternic worth their fees is the Escrow services included. The Buyer has already paid the money, Afternic is holding it and waiting for confirmation the Domain Name registration info has been changed by you.
I would strongly recommend getting a Paypal account if you have not already. This makes the payouts very fast and hassle-free. But they do have other payout methods you can decide on when creating your Afternic account.
